Sweden moved temporarily ahead of Group 8 leaders Croatia with a 3-0 win over Bulgaria in Stockholm. Second-half goals from Fredrik Ljungberg, Olof Mellberg and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were enough to see off the ten-man Bulgarians – whose hopes of a spot in Germany are virtually dashed. With the Bulgarians suffering through a bout of poor home form, they hoped to give their campaign a boost on the road in Stockholm. And an early run-and-gun from Chavdar Yankov in the third minute was a good sign for the struggling eastern Europeans.
It proved a false dawn, however, as they were played off the park for the remainder of the first period. The 33-year-old Barcelona striker Henrik Larsson – just back from injury and premature international retirement – thought he had given the home side the lead, but his headed goal in the fourth minute was disallowed for offside.
Then it was Larsson's strike partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic's turn to switch on the style. With bags of skill and panache, the lanky forward carved out a chance on the quarter-hour mark that was only just turned away by the diving Dimitar Ivankov.
The keeper was called into service again to rescue the visitors just a minute later when he got down like a snap to keep out an Ibrahimovic header from close range.
But for all the Swedes' possession and opportunities, Martin Petrov nearly knocked them out of their stride with a sucker punch down the left flank. On a deftly executed counterattack, the winger raced behind a sleepy-looking defence and broke through on goal. Only a last-ditch, diving effort from Andreas Isaksson kept the scoreline at nil-all before the break.
The Bulgarian revival did not last long, though, as Blagov Georgiev was shown a second yellow for a sloppy tackle on Ljungberg early in the second half. And for his blustery reaction to the sending-off, current coach and former Bulgarian hero Hristo Stoichkov was sent from the technical area.
The Swedes immediately set about capitalising on their man advantage. Ljungberg, quiet for most of the match, swivelled in the box to latch on to a deflected Larsson through-ball and slot past the sprawling Ivankov on 60 minutes.
The home side added to their lead after 75 minutes when captain Mellberg got on the end of an inch-perfect Tobias Linderoth cross to nod home. And they added another just one minute before the final whistle as Ibrahimovic rose brilliantly to latch onto Larsson's headed pass and snap home an overhead kick from close range.
The win sees Sweden out front in Group 8 and in very good shape for at least a second-placed finish and a spot in the play-offs for Germany 2006. Bulgaria's hopes of a spot at the finals are virtually dead and gone, as they remain mired in fourth with only three games to go.
