Juventus turn on style to sink InterFirst half goals from David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved gave Juventus all three points in their table topping clash with title rivals Inter Milan at the Stadio Delle Alpi on Sunday. Earlier, Paolo Maldini scored twice to hand Milan victory over Reggina and keep the pressure on the top two.Juventus turned on the style in the first half, and put on an attacking display worthy of the title Champions of Italy, and maybe even Champions of Europe.
Fiorentina are level on 13 points with Milan after a 3-2 home victory against fellow Tuscans Livorno who scored both their goals in the final four minutes.
The rest of the continent will have sat up and noticed this performance, not least the way the Old Lady dispatched the challenge of their closest title rivals in what was one of most eagerly awaited ties of the season so far.
And Juventus didn't disappoint, with the front pair of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Trezuguet causing the Inter defence all sorts of problems from the outset.
The physical presence of the big Swedish international unnerved the defensive duo of Marco Materazzi and Walter Samuel, and he combined with his partner to fashion the first goal after twenty minutes.
Ibrahimovic struck a vicious free kick from 25 yards which proved to be too hot for Inter 'keeper Julio Cesar to handle, allowing Trezeguet to pounce and convert the rebound with his head.
If the first was a team effort, the second was a touch a pure individual class, Pavel Nedved powering home a free kick. He split open what was perhaps a poorly constructed wall with a perfectly hit strike, the ball curling into the top left hand corner of Cesar's net.
Ibrahimovic's first half performance proved to be his downfall, as Inter had obviously identified the threat he posed, and he was crudely taken out of the game by a nasty hack from Materazzi, who was otherwise faultless all night, just before half time.
As a result, the second half was a more subdued affair, despite a brighter start from Inter. The Milan club threatened the Juve goal on a few occasions, but it was one of those nights for the visitors and the ball seemed destined to stay out of Christian Abbiati's net.
With fifteen minutes left, Juventus stepped off the gas in attack, and shored up in defence and midfield, and with Patrick Vieira and Emerson as commanding as ever in the centre of the pitch, Inter never really looked like scoring.
The win takes Juventus five points clear at the top of Serie A, and looking good for a repeat of last season's domestic success. The only question now is whether they are capable of adding a European title to their collection. On Sunday's evidence, the answer is a resounding yes.
Juve close in on recordJuventus closed in on the record for the best start to a Serie A campaign after beating title rivals Inter Milan 2-0 at the weekend. First-half goals by David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved gave the Italian champions six wins out of six in the division. The Bianconeri now have a five-point lead over second-placed Fiorentina and AC Milan.
It also took them to within two victories of equalling the record of eight consecutive wins at the start of a Serie A campaign, currently shared by the Juventus sides of the 1930-31 and 1985-86 seasons.
Having defeated title contenders Inter, Juventus's players will be confident of beating Serie A strugglers Messina and Lecce in their next two matches.
Should they manage that, they can then try to set a new mark when they host Sampdoria on October 26.
Juventus coach Fabio Capello, however, brushed off talk about the record.
"Records are only for the statisticians. The only thing that interests me is the end result," he was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday.
In that case, Capello should be confident.
Besides his current team, five other sides have managed to win their opening six games of the season. Of those, only one -- the Livorno side of the 1942-43 season -- failed to go on to win the scudetto.
The 59-year-old coach said he had been delighted by his team's performance against Inter.
"We gave away very little to Inter and did well to take advantage of the chances we created for ourselves," he said.
"Our midfield was fantastic. (Patrick) Vieira is not only great at stopping opponents in their tracks, he also knows how to go forward.
"And I still have to see a striker that can dribble through our defence."
Capello also said he was relieved Juve had broken a series of poor results against Inter, who won on their last three visits to Turin's Delle Alpi stadium, including a 1-0 victory in the final of the Italian Supercup in August.
"From a psychological point of view it was important to win this match -- to buck a negative trend.
"I wouldn't say we're clear of trouble, though. After all, the sun has only just started shining."
